Here’s my take on the tongue-in-cheek slogan tee: why bother wearing your heart on your sleeves when you can have it emblazoned across your chest on a T-shirt?
We can thank Henry Holland (House of Holland) and Brian Lichtenberg for making the humble T-shirt an A-lister must-have – the former for his kooky, sometimes rude, catchphrases in shouty capitals on oversized tees, and the latter for his humorous spin on luxury brand logos that appeared on sweatshirts and baseball caps.
When I’m feeling kinda uninspired, the first thing I reach for in my wardrobe is a T-shirt – it matches with everything. Tulip skirt, high-waisted bermudas, tapered trousers or denim overalls – the T-shirt is like french fries, it goes well with any condiment from ketchup to truffle oil. Together with slogans, it’s one fashion staple that no one can deny adds instant points to your style-meter and also shows off a sense of humour. Fashion, after all, can’t be taken that seriously. Laughter my friends will take you places.
PS: Slogan tees are also great for when you’re feeling anti-social, ‘cos why explain how you feel when you can say it with a tee.
